When it comes to ageing, fine lines appear first then over time wrinkles, a loss of volume and a loss of density become noticeable. The ageing pattern is described as a change in the balance of facial proportions. A youthful face represents the point in time when skeletal proportions are ideal for their soft tissues overlying. The lower face diameter begins to widen as mid facial tissues start to drop and with cheekbones and jaw bone resorption, changing the face from a youthful ‘V-shape’ into a squarer appearance.
Forehead lines are caused by the Frontalis muscle. Frontalis muscle is a thin sheet like muscle that sits just under the forehead skin, it is the muscle that we use to raise our eye brows and hence the horizontal forehead lines. Antiwrinkle injection can temporarily relax this muscle and minimize the wrinkled appearance of forehead.
Frown lines are caused by a group of muscles called the glabellar complex. These muscles are responsible for the frown/ angry expression. With time, those muscles become too strong and the lines caused by them become static. Anti-wrinkle injections can temporarily relax those muscles and eliminate the frowning expression.
Those are caused by the orbicularis oculi muscle which is a round shaped muscle that is located around each eye, this muscle closes the eye in a purse string manner, again, with time the lines around the eye become very prominent and this is when anti wrinkle injections can be of great benefit.
This is a natural facial fold that is not very prominent in the younger population. It is located between the nostril and the corner of mouth and hence the name nasolabial fold. With ageing, the midface start dropping and the nasolabial folds become more prominent. Dermal fillers can help reversing this problem with various techniques such as cheek filler augmentation which creates a face lift effect or direct injection of dermal filler into the nasolabial fold, sometimes both methods combined depending on the severity. This will he discussed during consultation.
